SPLIT SHOTTIN'

When the going gets tough… GO SMALLER or LIGHTER!!!

Split shottin' is another form of a "Carolina Rig." It's just using a smaller sized hook, line, sinker and weight that doesn't slide on the line.

Let's talk about the weight. As the name implies a simple spilt shot is attached to your line about 10 to 24 inches away from the hook. Select your split shot according to the depth and style of soft bait used. Keep in mind this set up is for finicky fish therefore smaller is always better.

Besides a split shot you could use a small rubber core sinker. The rubber core sinker allows you to adjust the size of weight and length of leader with a bit more ease.

Finally, the hook. Because of smaller baits I'll use anywhere from a #2 to a #2/0 light wire offset hook. Ultimately make sure it matches the bait in size.

Cast your bait out and let it sink. Retrieve it slowly. The subtle gliding presentation should provoke most finicky bass.

My favorite baits are the ZOOM BABY BRUSH HAWG, OUTLAW'S GETTER TUBES, and a select few small Lizards. In a skillful anglers hand, this set up can be a great search bait in the summer. Specially when some big pigs are hangin' out in bit deeper water.
